Lesson 1 — AI-Assisted Writing: From First Draft to Finished
The most effective way to use AI for writing is not to ask it to write things for you. It is to use it as a thinking partner and first-draft engine, then apply your own judgment and voice to refine the output. The final piece should sound like you — a more efficient, more polished version of you.
The practical workflow for any significant piece of writing looks like this: start by telling Claude what you are trying to achieve and who the audience is. Ask for a structure before asking for content — a clear outline is much easier to correct than a full draft. Then ask for the draft section by section if it is a long piece, or all at once for shorter work. Refine iteratively using the techniques from Module 2.

Brief
Tell Claude the purpose, audience and constraints. One paragraph is enough.
Structure
Ask for an outline before asking for content. Correct the structure now rather than the full draft later.
Draft
Ask for the full draft using the approved structure. Use specific tone and format instructions.
Refine
Use iterative prompts to adjust tone, cut length or improve specific sections.
Personalise
Read the output as a human, not an editor. Add your own voice, specific details and anything the AI could not have known.
Lesson 2 — AI-Powered Research: From Hours to Minutes
Research is one of the clearest examples of AI’s productivity impact. Tasks that required opening 15 browser tabs, skim-reading multiple articles and synthesising notes manually can now be completed in a single Perplexity search with follow-up questions.
The key is using the right tool for the right type of research. Perplexity searches the live web and cites its sources — use it for anything where recency matters: company news, current salary data, recent industry changes, a specific person’s recent activity. Claude does not have live web access by default, but it has deep pattern knowledge across enormous amounts of text — use it for synthesising information you already have, generating frameworks, explaining complex topics or researching historical or conceptual material that does not change frequently.
Research tool decision guide
Use Perplexity when:
• You need current information (last 6 months)
• You need cited sources you can verify
• You are researching a specific company or person
• You want recent salary benchmarks
• You need news about an industry
Use Claude when:
• You want to synthesise information you already have
• You want a concept explained clearly
• You want to understand an industry or skill area broadly
• You want frameworks or structured thinking
• You are working from documents you paste in
Lesson 3 — Async Communication: The Remote Worker’s Most Important Skill
In remote work, your written communication is your presence. When your colleagues cannot see you, what they see instead is the quality of your emails, your Slack messages, your status updates and your meeting notes. Poor async communication is the single biggest reason good remote workers fail in remote roles — and excellent async communication is one of the fastest ways to build a strong professional reputation in a distributed team.
AI significantly raises the baseline quality of written communication. The prompts below address the most common async communication challenges remote workers face:

Making a request clearly
“I need to send an async message asking [person/team] for [thing I need]. The context is [brief situation]. The deadline is [date]. Write a message that is direct, clear about what I need and easy to act on. No more than 100 words.”
Updating without over-explaining
“Write a brief status update for my team about [project/task]. Current status: [what is done]. Next steps: [what is next]. Blockers: [anything blocking progress]. Keep it under 80 words. Use a confident, matter-of-fact tone.”
Handling a difficult message
“I need to respond to this message: [paste message]. My position is [your view]. I want to be direct but not confrontational. The relationship is [manager/colleague/client]. Draft a response that addresses the issue clearly and keeps things professional.”
Lesson 4 — Your Personal AI Writing Style
The risk with AI-assisted writing is that everything starts to sound the same. The fix is to train Claude on your voice explicitly — a process that takes about fifteen minutes once and then makes every piece of writing you produce with AI sound like a polished version of you rather than a generic AI output.
The process: collect three to five examples of writing you have done that you are proud of — emails, documents, messages, whatever represents how you write at your best. Paste them into Claude with this instruction:
“Here are examples of my writing at its best: [paste examples]. Analyse my writing style — vocabulary choices, sentence rhythm, tone, level of formality, how I open and close pieces. Give me a concise description I can use to brief you on future writing tasks.”
Save Claude’s response as your “Writing Style Brief” in your prompt library. Paste it at the start of any conversation where you want Claude to write in your voice. This single habit is worth more than any other writing-related AI technique.
